On this day July 2 in Rock history:
1966 - Frank Sinatra's version of "Strangers In The Night" displaced The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a UK #1. Sinatra's recording would win him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year, despite the fact that Frank often said he didn't really like the song.
1975 - David Bowie's ninth studio album, "Young Americans" was officially certified Gold by the RIAA for sales of one million copies.
1977 - Billboard's top tune was "Gonna Fly Now", the theme from the Sylvester Stallone film Rocky, while Cashbox listed "Undercover Angel" by Alan O'Day as the best selling record in America.
1982 - "Mirage", the thirteenth studio album by the British and American rock band Fleetwood Mac, was released by Warner Bros. Records. The LP would produce several singles: "Hold Me" (US #4), "Gypsy" (US #12, UK #46), "Love in Store" (US #22), "Oh Diane" (UK #9), and "Can't Go Back" (UK #83). The album would top the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and reach #5 on the UK Official Album Chart and went Platinum in both the United States (2,000,000 in sales) and Great Britain (300,000 units sold).
